If I could create a Foodie Heaven to go to when I die, it would be Smorgasburg. Every Saturday, April through November, over 100 food vendors set up on the East River in Williamsburg for a gastronomically mind blowing event. Whether you’re a vegan or a carnivore, if you crave fish and chips from Handsome Hank’s, fresh tempeh from Barry’s, or a gluten free chestnut currant muffin from Krumville, there is something for anyone and everyone at Smorgasburg.
We really liked Lumpia Shack’s Filipino style spring rolls. The sampler ($9) includes a variety of rolls – ground pork, Peking duck, and truffled mushroom.
The East Coast oysters from Brooklyn Oyster Party were crisp and briny ($16 half dozen), but I couldn’t help but notice our shucker handling both patrons money and oysters without using gloves or hand washing.
The fish, shrimp, and chips from Hanks ($14) is a HUGE portion – definitely share this if you want to save room to try anything else.
Could you get any more hedonistic than bacon on a stick?
Some of the lines are long, but most items are cooked to order, and worth the wait. Many of the portions are big, and messy, so plan on sharing, and don’t forget the napkins. There are picnic tables if you don’t want to stand and eat.
Wash it down with some local craft beer, or a bubble tea from Thirst Tea while enjoying views of the East River.
Tip – Burn a few calories before gorging by walking over the Williamsburg Bridge from Manhattan, or spend the morning in Prospect Park.
