After a long winter of holiday parties, cocktails, and weather too cold for outdoor running, it’s time to detox!
We are bombarded with toxins daily from exposure to pesticides, bleach and ammonia in cleaning products, to hormone disruptors in hair dye and health and beauty aids.
If you had construction on your house, you may be exposed to chemical off gassing from paint or new carpeting.
Heavy metals such as mercury build up in the fat cells from certain types of fish or dental amalgams.
Even a bacterial infection can produce endotoxins, causing inflammation that can lead to leaky gut.
So, while Spring is classic detox season, anytime is good for a detox.
You were born with extraordinary detox systems within your liver, kidneys, GI tract, lymph, and sweat glands. That’s right – toxins and metals are expressed through sweating.
To make your detox go smoothly, and assure that you will detox more completely, a healthy eating plan coupled with the presence of proper nutrients will help your organ systems do their job.

To break down toxins for elimination, there is a stepwise process (Phase I, Phase II, and Phase III for detoxification to elimination) to convert toxins from fat soluble to water soluble before being excreted from the body.
If you have an imbalance or absence of proper nutrients to support that process, you may be left with partially metabolized toxins and free radicals that build up in the blood, and cannot be excreted, which may leave you with nausea, lethargy, brain fog and joint pain during your detox.
Be sure to pair your detox program with lots of fresh, organic fruits and vegetables, and plant based proteins. Refrain from processed foods, and GMO’s.

Broccoli with Garlic and Shitake Mushrooms
Serves 4 as side
2 tbsp good olive oil
4 cloves fresh garlic, chopped
2 cups sliced shitake mushrooms, about 5 oz
1 medium head broccoli, cut into florets
Tamari or soy sauce*
-Lightly sauté garlic on olive oil until soft, add broccoli, cover and allow to steam until bright green and still crisp. Sprinkle with tamari, toss and serve
*Substitute coconut aminos if you are soy free. Use good quality tamari if you are gluten free
Curried Tofu Scramble
Serves 4
1 lb extra firm tofu, drained – use product labeled NON GMO Project Verified
2 tbsp good olive oil
1 bunch scallions, trimmed and sliced
2 roma tomatoes, about 8oz, chopped
1 tbsp of your favorite curry powder*
1 tbsp fresh chopped oregano leaves or basil leaves
1/4 tsp sea salt
-In a medium skillet, sauté scallions in olive oil over medium heat until soft, about 3-5 minutes
-Add tomatoes and sauté until heated through, about 3 minutes
-Stir in curry and salt
-Holding over a sieve, crumble tofu by squeezing out excess water before adding to pan, fold in thoroughly, and heat through
-Toss with oregano, and serve
*Substitute 1 tsp turmeric powder for curry if you do not like curry
