In New Jersey, anyone can call themselves a nutritionist without having any formal education or training. Registered Dietitians are the nutrition experts. To earn the Registered Dietitian, or “RD” credential, a minimum of the following must be completed:
- Bachelor of Science degree in Clinical Nutrition from a nationally recognized university
- 1200 hour supervised internship program in various areas of healthcare including working in nursing homes, ICU, hospital surgical units, diabetes outpatient counseling, and community nutrition
- Comprehensive national exam administered by the American Dietetic Association
- Credentials maintained through mandatory continuing education
